| Russ Holmes has recently become one of the Deacons at Garden Valley Bible Church. We sat down with Russ and asked him several questions to help you get to know him and his family better. Want to know more about Russ? Read on... Place of Birth: Sheffield, England (about 3 hours drive north of London). Father's occupation: When I was a child he owned 3 Frozen food stores and then moved into accountancy. Mother's occupation: Retired now but set up a training company to get the unemployed into jobs. She currently spends a lot of her time getting involved in short term mission trips including regular trips to a few projects in the Philippines and more recently to the Mercy Ship, Africa Mercy. How many brothers and sisters? 2 older brothers. Which number are you in the sibling order? The baby of the family. Married/When: Carrie and married in South Africa in 1997. Eleven of my family flew from England for the wedding. We got to do the wedding ceremony all over again 3 weeks later in England. How did you meet: While Russ was working for Mercy Ships onboard one of their vessels while it was in South Africa. Children/Grandchildren: 2 girls, Rachel - 7 years and Katie 4 years. Conversion Summary: I was on a Christian camp in 1982 and knew by the end of the week that I needed to make a commitment to the Lord which I did. Favorite sport (to watch or play): Formula 1 motor racing to watch and swimming to play. Favorite candy: Jelly Beans Favorite meal: Mexican or a traditional English Sunday roast dinner with Yorkshire puddings. (If you don't know what they are you have lived a very deprived life). | Favorite drink: Juice or Sprite Favorite game: Playing cards Favorite author: I like autobiographies although I am not a big reader. Favorite movie(s): The Bourne series. Favorite worship song(s): Come, now is the time to worship. Favorite book of the Bible: Psalms Spiritual Gift(s): Leadership abilities and I thoroughly enjoy serving the poor and needy. (not sure that I would class that as a spiritual gift though). Heroes: Don Stephens (This may sound corny as I work for Mercy Ships which he founded, but I take my hat off to the guy for grasping a vision that God gave him and running with it especially when he didn't know a thing about ships in 1978). Childhood award: European champion for 10-pin bowling, age 15. Dinner Guest: Bono from U2. Hobbies: Spending time with my amazing family and DIY around the house and yard. Who would you rather be: Corporate 500 CEO, Movie Star, Politician or Author: Corporate 500 CEO. Cats or Dogs: Both ought to be shot. I dream that someday I'll: find a way to reach all the people that haven't heard the gospel before so our Lord will return and take us home. I wish I were better at: Remembering peoples names.
